The model which defines a technical turning point for the German car manufacturer Porsche, all-wheel drive and a larger engine are the main innovations of this 911 serie.

The model known as 964 was originally offered to the public with the sole name Carrera 2 or Carrera 4 depending on the version, it was in fact the first generation of 911 which came out with the possibility of being configured as rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive; further innovations include a new 3.6 liter naturally aspirated air-cooled 6-cylinder boxer engine, power steering and ABS as standard option, as well as a retractable rear spoiler that automatically raises above 80 km/h.

The car was available in coupé, cabrio or Targa trim, this is the last generation to present this setup with the traditional removable Targa roof.
